Through the years, Sears, Roebuck and Company changed manufacturers and outboard brand names several times. In 1914, the company began offering outboard motors through catalogue ordering. Sears continued to provide outboards through 1996.MotorgoFrom 1914 to 1932, the first outboard motor sold by Sears, Roebuck and Company was the Motorgo. Re: Old Sears outboard identificationYeppah - It's a 1977 7.5Hp Sears gamefisher. Get a load of this; The good news is that it's the lightest 7.5hp motor I've ever been able to find.
The less than great news is that it uses Tecumseh's world renowned flop of a solid state ignition, which is no longer available. There are some inventive folks here, who have made a study of resurrecting these defunct SSI stators. When you are screwing around with this motor, never turn it over without that plug wire grounded, that can easily barbecue the stator if it's not dead already. If it has a kill switch, I might disconnect it, and use the choke to kill it. If it still has spark, it's probably not gonna be hard to make it go again. If it has no spark, and cleaning up all connections is no help, it's probably still recoverable, but it will be a bit of a process. If you want to take a crack at it, the expertise is readily available.
You need to join this crew, too;groups.yahoo.com/group/eskaoutboards/. Re: Old Sears outboard identificationIt might be a little older than the 1977 as it has no twist grip. The throttle is on the front of the motor along with a choke knob and idle mix knob. It does not have a kill switch. It does have good spark and probably will start right up if I put fuel in it. I drained it when I put it away 15 years ago.

When I first got it it had a different power head. The origional one had points and condenser and that one had no spark.I was having trouble finding parts 20+ years ago for it. I got the newer power head from a boat shop in the area for free(Long story).
Dell xps 10 tablet charger. He had it laying around the shop for a few years because the lower end was crushed in an accident. The power head was actually pretty new but it didn't fit my colomn assembly exactly. I had a friend with a machine shop make me a new top plate for $40.
I put it together and it ran like a charm. The new power head had the solid state ignition. I'm going to clean it up to use on a 14 ft. Re: Old Sears outboard identificationmrcrabs.that is correct.
As in my previous post you will see that I changed the engine. As far as the seal goes. The top plate where it connects to the water jacket was only slightly different from the origional one. I was a UPS driver at the time and I had a large machine shop on my route. I took him a scale drawing of the plate I needed and he made one for me. I made a new gasket to fit and it all bolted up perfectly. I used the motor on a 10 ft.
Duracraft jon boat for about 5 years and never had a problem with it. I drained the fuel, ran it dry and put it where you see it in the pic in 1997. I still have the origional engine also.
I will try to post a pic of the ID plate of the old one.
I recently bought a newer outboard motor for my jon boat so I no longer need my old motor. The motor is a late 1970's Ted Williams short shaft 7.5 horse power outboard.I bought the motor with my boat in March and I have used it over 100 times since then, and only ran into a few pull string issues. However, I was unhappy with the top speed of the motor.6 mile per hour pushing a 14' modified vee jon boat with an approximately 800lb load.and the loud nature of the motor was quite annoying when driving for over 40 minutes on the Ohio River. I'd like to say that it starts on one pull, but typically I have to pull it 3 or 4 times before she warms up and takes off.The pull string issue I have been dealing with lately is a worn bolt that holds the pull string mechanism together. Atleast once out of 3 or 4 trips the bolt will pop out. I'll go to pull start the motor and the cord will just pull out and not catch the motor.

So I have to take the hood off remove 4 nuts that hold the pull string on.I then have to tighten the screw back up and put the motor back together. This whole process takes about 90 seconds, so its more of a hassle than anything. I recently put some teflon tape on the threads of the threads and it seems to be fixed for the time bieng.but no promises.I know this probably makes a lot of people really want the motor. I just want to let people everything I can about it and let them know what they are getting so there's no surprises.
I'd rather not sell the motor than sell it to someone and have them feel cheated or than I lied to them. I honeslty think the motor will make someone a good CHEAP motor. Heres the good news about the motor:The motor is a short shaft air cooled motor, which sets 19' from the top of the transom at its deepest angle, and will set much shallower on its other tilted angles.
The motor will safely run in approximatley 14' of water when tilted out the furthest and a 250lb man driving. When out of water the motor fully tilted will set inches under the bottom of the transom, which makes navigating shallow water feasible. The motor itself weighs around 48lbs so its fairly lightweight for its size, which will make lifting your boat over shallow rock or sand bars easy.
It should make someone a good motor for small creeks, but is suitable for large lakes and rivers as well. We typically fished Rocky Fork Lake in Highland County, Ohio, the Ohio River, and Ohio Brush Creek.I'm asking $150obo for the motor, gas tank (with over 2 gallons of mixed gas), and fuel line. I recently saw one go for $75 as parts so I feel that $150 is a good deal, but time will tell. Since its an air cooled motor I can meet anywhere and start it up for you.Summary:Good: lightweight, shallow drive, very fuel efficient, cheap, very simple and easy to work onBad: possible pull string issue, loud, oldIf I don't respond to your questions or pms quickly you can get ahold of me at 937-779-7158.
